This 40 despatch stock car is painted box car red with white lettering and runs on black Andrews trucks. Stock cars were used all over the railroad until about 1960, when shipping by rail was no longer economical. There was a stop over stock yard at Glenwood that was employed to off load, water and feed; then continue the shipment to Chicago or St. Paul. There were a lot of 'cattle only' trains in the late 1940s, and it would take a fair bite out of a day to water and feed. The cattle were coming from Montana, the plains of northern Minnesota, or the Dakotas, and they would really need the rest when they arrived at Glenwood. A forty car train was not uncommon during the fall of the year.
